BIM Q&A: Leveraging BIM for Quality Management in Transmission Line Projects

Using BIM software to create a model allows for the generation of a three-dimensional information model of a transmission line project. By incorporating the project’s timeline, this model evolves into a 4D information model. This 4D model enables visualization of the construction process in three dimensions according to the schedule, allowing for the simulation, analysis, and approval of safety construction plans. It also supports preliminary design, detailed construction drawing design, tower material management, as well as the analysis and resolution of installation quality issues through collision detection.

BIM Q&A | How to use BIM for quality management? Quality Management of Transmission Lines Based on BIM Technology

(1) Program Management

The construction of ultra-high voltage transmission lines is divided into multiple sub-projects and various processes, such as foundation engineering and tower assembly. Each tower’s geographical location differs, which means the foundation type, tower identification, and other parameters vary significantly. As a result, construction methods within the same process can differ. For example, in this project, the construction methods for the WKZ18160 foundation and the BL9257 foundation are not the same.

First, using the established 4D model visualization technology, the layout of the construction site can be simulated. This allows for visual planning of site access roads, signage, material storage, and facility setup. Adjustments can be made to optimize the layout, ensuring the safest and most efficient construction site organization.

Second, the safety construction plan directly impacts the safety and quality control at the transmission line site. Visual simulation technology can verify the practicality of the construction plan and safety measures, facilitating easier review and modification. For instance, during tower assembly, plans for pole assembly, crane operation, and crossing can be simulated and rehearsed to develop the most effective and safe approach.

(2) Quality Process Management

Quality process management involves performing collision checks using the 4D models before constructing transmission line foundations or assembling towers. This helps verify the accuracy of preliminary designs and construction drawings, preventing conflicts such as bolt and tower material collisions during installation, which could otherwise cause delays and increased costs.

Before construction begins, the construction plan and safety technical measures are disclosed. The 4D visualization simulation offers technicians and workers a clear and intuitive understanding of the construction details and safety procedures, enabling faster and better comprehension, which supports higher project quality.

Furthermore, during or after construction, any structural issues or design changes identified in the completed work can be analyzed from multiple angles using 3D models. Teklaststructures software can also apply stress analysis to evaluate structural performance, further enhancing quality management throughout the construction process.
