BIM Q&A: Understanding BIM Modeling Standards and Their Current Challenges

Model establishment forms the foundation of BIM applications, with BIM model system standards serving as the core. Currently, several issues remain unresolved regarding BIM modeling standards:

BIM Q&A | What are the BIM modeling standards? What are the current issues with BIM modeling standards?

1) Modeling standards lack unification, resulting in a low reuse rate of component families. Existing families cannot be repeatedly loaded or assembled.

2) Discrepancies exist between the model and application systems. Inconsistent naming conventions between Revit and platform projects cause problems in information exchange.

3) The separation between standard family creators and users leads to insufficient understanding of information and poor communication.

4) Traditional workflows hinder effective information exchange, preventing resource sharing. To support detailed construction scheduling early on and facilitate subsequent construction and information management, projects are divided based on the work breakdown structure (WBS), ensuring each component has a unique WBS code.

Building on this, standardized modeling is implemented by establishing unified principles for model segmentation, file naming, and model construction during the early stages. Before modeling begins, site construction and model development are segmented and named according to these unified standards, creating a consistent model system framework. During model construction, standard components are created following modeling standards and unified benchmark principles, including consistent positioning references, axis grids, elevations, parameters, and more. When developing component families, all related information—such as geometry, materials, performance, specifications, and other auxiliary data—is standardized. Furthermore, when families are called upon, they must be accessed through naming rules and attributes defined on the standard family management platform.

As these standards continue to improve, efforts are underway to build standard family libraries and management platforms based on the existing foundation. Various application family libraries are created according to group-level model standards. Revit-based interface systems are developed, with output interfaces and connections to application management platforms aligned with Revit-based model systems. These initiatives aim to facilitate the use and interactive sharing of standard component families, boost work efficiency, and effectively reduce model data sizes.
