BIM Q&A: Understanding and Classifying Different BIM Software Tools

BIM software tools play a crucial role in integrating engineering construction data based on BIM. Without these tools, the concept of engineering construction data integration remains theoretical and cannot be effectively realized.

BIM Q&A | What are the BIM software tools? Classification of BIM software tools

Many people mistakenly equate BIM modeling tools with BIM itself. However, BIM modeling tools are only one category within the broader BIM software tool system, which itself is a subset of the overall BIM system. Within the BIM software tool system, tools are generally classified into four main types based on their primary functions: modeling software platforms, collaborative management platforms, specialized functional software, and plugin tools.

Modeling software platform tools are capable of independently creating model data and support data sharing and integration. Examples include Revit series products and Bentley MicroStation related series.

Collaborative management platforms focus on managing and applying BIM data to facilitate collaboration. These platforms can carry, display, and manage BIM data applications but do not have the capability to create BIM data independently. Although many collaborative management platforms exist on the market, their features tend to be similar and somewhat homogeneous.

Specialized functional software refers to tools with specific functions tailored to particular fields or professions, such as structural analysis software, rendering software, or building performance analysis software. Unlike modeling platforms, whose primary role is data creation and offer comprehensive functionality, specialized software focuses on data analysis and application, offering deeper, field-specific capabilities. Some of these specialized tools can create data independently, but their ability to share data is often limited.

Plugin tools are designed to enhance existing software but cannot independently create or process data. Instead, they must be attached to modeling platforms, collaborative management platforms, or specialized software to function. Plugins serve as functional extensions that improve the efficiency or add new features to the host software.
