The BIM model serves as the theoretical foundation for applying BIM technology. It allows for the parameterization and integration of various key components—such as boards, routers, switches, power modules, maintenance terminals, and LEUs—within train control systems. The model establishes connections and constraints among these components according to design standards, enabling three-dimensional visualization of equipment operation and maintenance. Currently, the main BIM platforms used in China include:
Revit Series
Revit, developed by Autodesk, is a core BIM design software widely adopted in private building design across China. The suite includes three main products: Revit Architecture, Revit Structure, and Revit MEP, which cover architecture, structural engineering, and mechanical, electrical, and plumbing disciplines respectively. Revit offers a comprehensive library of commonly used construction components, providing users with convenient tools that meet most design needs. Additionally, users can customize designs to fit specific requirements of existing elements.
Bentley Series
Bentley’s product line spans four main categories: people and architecture, structural engineering, and mechatronics. Its primary applications are in large industrial facilities—such as private oil refineries, chemical plants, power stations, medical facilities, and machinery—as well as essential infrastructure including tunnels, bridges, highways, municipal systems, and irrigation projects. Bentley leverages powerful BIM dual-core image modeling and processing software with strong graphic capabilities. However, a notable drawback is that each Bentley product features a unique user interface, making it challenging for new users to quickly learn. Additionally, the limited Bentley object library can complicate modeling tasks.
Dassault’s CATIA Software
CATIA is a high-end mechanical design and manufacturing software widely used in aviation, automotive, and other advanced industries. It excels in modeling and rendering complex shapes and large-scale structures, earning broad adoption within China’s engineering and construction sectors.
Among the three software platforms mentioned, Revit offers several distinct advantages:
(1) Powerful view coordination: Detailed views—including plans, 3D models, and cross-sections—are fully interconnected. Any change made in one part of the model automatically updates all other views and related drawings or tables in real time, reducing workload and minimizing errors.
(2) Extensibility: Developers can expand Revit’s functionality through API-based secondary development to customize the software as needed.
(3) Strong interoperability: Revit supports the widely used IFC standard format, allowing users to integrate information from different software platforms into a unified model to facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration.
(4) Reusable architectural elements: Through the “Family” feature, users can create custom component models that can be reused in future projects, enhancing design efficiency.
