BIM Q&A: How Easy Is It to Learn BIM Software and Which Tools Should Professionals Master?

Training project managers and technicians to master numerous new software programs presents significant challenges. Therefore, it is essential to focus on learning a select few widely used mainstream software to build practical skills effectively. Below is an overview of some key software commonly used in the industry:

BIM Q&A | Is BIM software easy to learn? What software should BIM practitioners learn?

1. Autodesk Revit: Currently the most widely used software in China, Revit offers a user-friendly interface and supports both design and construction drawings. Autodesk’s AutoCAD has a long-standing presence and high usage rate in China, which greatly contributes to Revit’s popularity and adoption.

2. Tekla Structures (formerly Xsteel): Developed by Tekla in the 1990s, this construction software focuses on Building Information Modeling (BIM). Renamed Tekla Structures in 2004, it is now the leading software for steel structure project design. It also includes features for structural and concrete design, though its use outside steel structure design remains limited.

3. Rhino: Rhino is a powerful 3D modeling software based on NURBS technology, known for its expertise in product appearance modeling. Created by the American company Robert McNeel in 1998, Rhino has increasingly been adopted in architectural design. When paired with the Grasshopper parametric modeling plugin, it allows rapid creation of diverse and complex curved architectural forms.

4. Autodesk Navisworks Manage: This software, developed by Autodesk, enables visualization, simulation, and analysis of 3D design models in various formats. Navisworks supports all project stakeholders by facilitating reliable integration, sharing, and review of detailed 3D models, serving as a core tool in the Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflow. It also integrates with Microsoft Project or Excel for data linkage and progress simulation.

5. Guanglian Da Technology Co., Ltd.: A prominent Chinese software company specializing in building software, Guanglian Da has developed two BIM software series: Guanglian Cloud and Guanglian Da BIM. Guanglian Cloud is a cloud computing platform tailored for the construction industry, offering standard data management and team collaboration features for all users, alongside specialized cloud solutions for specific domains. Guanglian Da BIM delivers comprehensive BIM solutions for large, complex projects, including standardized software tools such as BIM5D, MagiCAD, BIM Calculation, BIM Layout, and BIM Formwork.
