From an external viewpoint, some small and medium-sized design firms that have long invested in BIM have successfully leveraged this technology to drive initial innovation. By applying BIM, they have increased the added value of their designs while creating new business areas and models.
Although small and medium-sized design firms lack the resource advantages of large enterprises in software, hardware, and capital investment, their smaller scale, fewer management layers, faster decision-making, and higher execution efficiency give them a unique edge. These firms often possess strong professional and technical expertise in their specific fields, establishing a comparative advantage as local leaders. This flexibility and agility enable them to focus their efforts on breakthroughs in specific fields or new technologies, potentially securing a leading position in localized technical capabilities.

Figure 1 presents an analysis of the award-winning companies in the BIM Popularization and Application Award at the “Innovation Cup” BIM Competition over five years. In 2012 and 2013, all winning companies were large design firms. However, starting in 2014, small and medium-sized design firms began appearing among the award winners. From 2014 to 2016, these firms consistently accounted for nearly 30% of the winners each year, showing a steady upward trend.
Research reveals that a Class A design institute in the southwest region, with only 150 engineering and technical staff, has dedicated nearly five years to persistent BIM practice. This commitment allowed them to accumulate systematic project experience and apply BIM technology effectively in design projects. As a result, they gained recognition from clients and enhanced the added value of their designs. Their BIM efforts expanded into new business areas and increased operating income by over 30%, both directly and indirectly. This institute has become a pioneer in the transformation and development of small and medium-sized design firms.
Therefore, to gain a competitive edge in today’s intense market, small and medium-sized design firms must leverage BIM applications as technical support. By doing so, they can expand their business scope and models, transition into engineering general contracting, and provide comprehensive lifecycle technical services, establishing a diversified market presence.
