As BIM technology continues to evolve, its applications have expanded well beyond building construction. Today, BIM plays an increasingly important role in the operation and maintenance of railway station buildings.

1. Under the guidance of China Railway Corporation, the China Railway BIM Alliance has been established, spearheading the development of BIM standards tailored for the railway industry. Numerous railway design institutes and construction units have actively engaged in research and pilot projects involving BIM, laying a strong foundation for its adoption in operation and maintenance activities.
2. As research and pilot applications of railway BIM projects progress, the industry is seeing a growing pool of professionals skilled in BIM. This talent influx supports the integration of BIM technology into railway operation and maintenance. Additionally, with railway companies recruiting highly educated personnel annually, frontline technical staff are increasingly able to proficiently utilize BIM, unlocking its full potential.
3. Approximately 80% of a building’s total lifecycle costs occur during the operation and maintenance phase. Implementing high-quality, efficient, and specialized management during this phase can lead to significant resource savings and economic benefits. While the initial cost of applying BIM to individual projects remains high, the marginal cost of adopting BIM during operation and maintenance is relatively low, especially since BIM has already been introduced during the design and construction stages. This enhances BIM’s overall cost-effectiveness.
In summary, BIM technology effectively addresses challenges related to information exchange and interdepartmental collaboration in traditional railway station operation and maintenance management. Coupled with its growing adoption and pilot successes within the railway sector, BIM is poised for broader application in this area. For these reasons, advancing BIM technology in the operation and maintenance of railway station buildings is both timely and necessary.
