Parametric modeling is a key advantage of BIM technology. In bridge BIM modeling, parameters can be categorized into four main types: geometric parameters, positioning parameters, material parameters, and adaptive parameters.

(1) Geometric parameters drive the geometric dimensions during BIM model construction. These include length, angle, and diameter parameters.
(2) Positioning parameters control the positional changes of various components within the model.
(3) Material parameters serve two main functions: they define the visual appearance of components according to the material, and they assign physical properties that correspond to the material used.
(4) Adaptive parameters allow dynamic adjustment of the number, spacing, and positions of components as other parameters change. For example, the layout of transverse partitions in a steel box girder adjusts based on the girder’s length and the spacing between partitions.
Parameters differ in priority and application levels. Listing too many parameters together can cause difficulty in searching and using them, leading to confusion in the logic of parameter modification.
To ensure efficient and accurate reuse of family components and BIM models, it is essential to establish hierarchical principles for parameter classification.
Parameters that are commonly used or critically affect model dimensions during modification are classified as commonly used parameters. Those that remain mostly unchanged across projects and require minimal adjustments are classified as non-essential parameters. Non-essential parameters are not displayed in the parameter list and can only be modified by entering the Edit Load Family interface when necessary.
Some parameters are interlinked, with certain values determined by others through calculations. Incorrect modifications can cause constraint conflicts, potentially leading to model failure. To prevent this, formulas are used to restrict values, and input parameters automatically calculate and populate dependent values.
Linked parameters are placed at the bottom of the parameter list and are generally not recommended for modification during family component application.
