The Martyrs’ Mausoleum in Michniów, Poland, resembles rows of wooden country houses when viewed from the north and south. However, these symbolic wooden cabins evoke a sense of unease, as each fragment appears to clash and disintegrate, resembling the aftermath of an earthquake or fire.

Designed by Nizio Design International, this architectural monument serves as a tribute and reconciliation to remember the atrocities that took place in Michniów and other Polish villages during World War II in 1943. The monument was officially opened on July 12, 2021, thirteen years after the project began, coinciding with the 78th anniversary of the Michniów reconciliation.

Mirosław Nizio, Director of Nizio Design International, described the project as an architectural style of commemoration: “The building’s solid exterior illustrates the process of destruction, giving it a sculptural quality. At the same time, it evokes the image of a rural cottage. Above all, it must represent a ‘peaceful home.’”

The fragmented elements symbolize the breakdown and turmoil of a ‘world order,’ resembling ruins left after a fire. The cuts and openings in the solid façade evoke tension and emotional depth. Both the monumental exterior and the interior design, including the permanent exhibitions, are rooted in the historical events and the intense reconciliation process, conveying the suffering endured by Polish villages under Nazi and Soviet occupation during World War II.

Nizio Design International led both the architectural and exhibition design for this project. From concept to construction, the mausoleum has received international praise. It won the European Real Estate Award in the Public Service Building category in 2011. Additionally, it was named one of the top 12 most anticipated construction projects of 2016 by the renowned architecture platform Dezeen.com. In June 2021, Director Mirosław Nizio received the Internet User Award at the 10th POLITYKA Architecture Awards for this work.
