Key Considerations for Using BIM in Design

As BIM gains momentum in our country, more companies and individuals are beginning to recognize its value. Leading firms have started incorporating BIM technology during the project design phase. In this article, I will discuss the key considerations when using BIM for design.

1. Choosing the Right Software

The cost of BIM software remains a critical factor. Initially, it is essential to focus on developing engineers’ 3D modeling skills. Usually, the design process begins with 3D modeling software to build the base model. Then, specialized BIM software is used to add attributes, enhancing the design’s depth and scope. This approach allows engineers to understand future trends and experience the benefits of BIM firsthand. It also helps avoid overspending on multiple software licenses that may not be fully utilized, ensuring maximum value from the selected tools.

2. Training and Experience of Modeling Personnel

After the BIM model is created during the design phase, it will be handed over to construction management and contractors for further use. The detailed information embedded in the model can greatly assist these teams. Since many construction details are incorporated early on, it is crucial that modeling personnel are not only skilled in BIM software but also possess practical experience in construction or supervision. Alternatively, involving experts with relevant field experience ensures the model accurately reflects real-world requirements.

3. Advancing in Civil and Geotechnical Engineering

Currently, practical BIM design cases are gradually being introduced. Technologically, 2D and 3D design methods will initially coexist, with a gradual transition towards predominantly 3D-based design. Moving forward, efforts will focus on identifying more suitable software or optimizing existing software capabilities to support civil and geotechnical engineering design. Active research and experimentation are underway to meet the evolving needs of project owners.

In summary, these three points highlight the key aspects to consider when implementing BIM in design. I hope this analysis offers valuable insights. Moreover, it is important to avoid overly complex BIM designs in domestic construction, as excessive complexity can impede BIM’s development. I encourage more design firms to adopt BIM thoughtfully, contributing to its growth and success.
