The Heuvelkwartier project by MVRDV envisions transforming the Heuvel shopping center in Eindhoven into a sustainable, green cultural hub. This initiative explores the future spatial identity of shopping centers by expanding existing structures and converting the roof into a public park that integrates commercial retail and cultural entertainment. The architect’s highlight is a cultural center shaped like a “glass mountain,” designed to become the landmark of Heuvel.

This renovation project updates the existing shopping centers and concert halls with a focus on sustainable design, aiming to redefine the shopping experience. It connects the base structure with the surrounding urban fabric by transforming the originally enclosed walkway into an open one. Additionally, various green plants are introduced on the rooftop, establishing a new commercial benchmark in downtown Eindhoven.

By opening the base and integrating it with the urban surroundings, the project replaces the previously enclosed walkway with an open one. The roof, rich with greenery, contributes to establishing a commercial landmark at the heart of Eindhoven.

“Our goal is to create an open and flexible center that blends shopping, residential, and cultural experiences.
To achieve this, we opened up the existing building, introduced seven new functional blocks, and made significant modifications to the rooftop area.
We aim to foster interaction between citizens and the urban environment while maintaining diverse spatial functions.
We believe this renovated area already possesses a unique charm of its own.”

Among the seven new functional blocks, some serve as expanded spaces for the music hall. These stacked ‘boxes’ resemble a ‘music mountain,’ designed to capture the attention of the public.
“Culture breathes new life into a city,” said Winy Maas, founding partner of MVRDV. “As a rapidly growing contemporary city, Eindhoven deserves a striking cultural and music center.”

The Eindhoven city government has unanimously praised the project proposal, providing a strong foundation for its future development and promotion.

This project also represents MVRDV’s latest exploration into the future of retail spaces. Previous projects by the studio include Marble Arch Hill, which aimed to revitalize Oxford Street in London, and Tainan He Le Plaza, an oasis created within a semi-abandoned shopping center.
