A BIM system is designed to create, integrate, and reuse building information and specialized knowledge throughout the entire lifecycle of a building. By combining IT technologies, computer-aided design methods, and expertise from the AEC/FM sectors, a BIM system develops and integrates building information models from a design perspective.
The main distinction between BIM systems and traditional computer-aided design (CAD) tools lies in the type of information they manage. Traditional CAD systems primarily focus on geometric drawing data. However, essential details—such as door and window specifications or the lengths of beams and columns—cannot be directly extracted from these geometric shapes. Instead, they require interpretation by personnel to be useful.
In contrast, BIM systems enable users to access necessary information directly from the information model itself, removing the need for manual interpretation.
Key features of a BIM system include:
1. The ability to import and export building information models. BIM systems can process imported models and efficiently export updated versions.
2. Seamless information sharing across multiple disciplines. Buildings require extensive data from various professional fields at different stages, which must be synchronized and shared smoothly through BIM systems. For example, if an architect adjusts the position of a beam in the BIM model, the structural engineer’s BIM system should immediately reflect these changes directly from the updated model.
3. Targeted information processing on individual objects, each with a unique identity and significance. Every object contains relevant data that can be parametrically described, such as a beam’s position, geometry, and quantity.
