Overcoming the Challenges of Advancing BIM Technology in China

As the country with the world’s largest construction industry, China must prioritize the promotion and application of BIM technology. Currently, most BIM software tools available are foreign products with limited localization, leading to discrepancies with domestic standards, specifications, and data formats. These differences pose significant challenges to advancing BIM technology in China. In this article, I will outline the key issues that need to be addressed to drive BIM development forward in the country.

1. Market Awareness of BIM. The development of BIM should not rely solely on owners and enterprises acting from their individual perspectives; it requires active involvement from government agencies as well. A collaborative effort between government and industry is essential to effectively promote BIM technology and create a mutually beneficial environment. Furthermore, governments and industry organizations should take the lead in developing or endorsing new standards for design and construction technologies, along with project management guidelines specifically tailored to BIM applications. There is also an urgent need for professional consulting firms capable of providing BIM technology support, management services, and integrated BIM solutions across various engineering projects.

2. Comprehensive BIM Standardization. Both the government and the construction industry must actively participate in the development of BIM standards. It is critical that the government listens to and incorporates feedback from enterprises facing BIM implementation challenges. Practical and applicable BIM-related standards should be established to improve the industry’s systems, mechanisms, and regulations. Additionally, BIM promotion should cover both fundamental standards, such as IFC, and more advanced standards that address different levels of BIM application.

3. Localization of BIM Software. Currently, BIM software in China heavily depends on foreign platforms, with most domestic products being derivatives of these tools. Although some research institutions and scholars have made progress in developing proprietary BIM software, the core issue remains unresolved. There is a pressing need for systematic research and development of a comprehensive suite of indigenous BIM software solutions, which requires coordinated efforts from all BIM stakeholders.

4. Training and Development of BIM Talent. To fully leverage BIM technology, enterprises must cultivate skilled professionals. However, China faces a severe shortage of BIM talent. Most designers have only a basic understanding of BIM and lack proficiency in software operation, limiting BIM’s broader adoption. Additionally, although many BIM training institutions exist, they primarily focus on modeling skills, with little emphasis on BIM processes and management. It is crucial for enterprises and social organizations to invest comprehensively in BIM talent development, as only strong and innovative teams can unlock BIM’s full potential.

5. BIM Application Models. While BIM offers clear advantages over traditional building information technologies, it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. In China, two extreme approaches to BIM implementation are common. One involves rushing into BIM adoption without strategic planning, which results in wasted resources and a negative perception of BIM. The other takes a cautious “wait-and-see” stance, delaying adoption until others demonstrate success or abandoning BIM if early attempts fail. Both extremes hinder BIM promotion. Governments and enterprises should prepare thoroughly, plan strategically, and implement BIM in stages to identify the model that best suits their needs.

The points above reflect my personal observations on the challenges facing BIM promotion in China. While not exhaustive or deeply analytical, I hope these insights prove valuable to anyone interested in this topic.
