Alexis Dornier designed the sculptural, undulating roof of the two-story “Alpha House” in Ubud, Bali. This residential building features a double-layered structure composed of two distinct architectural styles: a simple, box-shaped base that supports the upper level. The upper floor showcases a series of twisted forms in its walls and ceilings, creating a rhythmic and dynamic sequence throughout the design.

In the Alpha House, Dornier crafted a unique and iconic architectural expression, forming a rhythmic pattern that harmonizes with its surroundings. The sculptural volume reflects the rolling mountain landscape characteristic of Bali’s natural environment. Oriented east to west, the building provides shade and shelter for neighboring properties. Kolobukan stone, a locally sourced hard sandstone traditional to Balinese architecture, serves as the primary material for the project.

The architecture is organized into two stories with a practical and repetitive layout. The ground floor consists of a simple box housing the living room, kitchen, lounge, and garage. The upper floor is dedicated to bedrooms, bathrooms, and balconies. Outside, the swimming pool runs parallel to the building’s length, mirroring the undulating design elements on its water surface.
