There is still no clear consensus on whether design demands greater creativity or transformation. While creating a masterpiece from the ground up involves numerous challenges, transforming an existing foundation is equally complex, as it requires balancing attachment to the original with the need for change. Private Mansion No. 555 falls into the latter category. This residential project in Ahmedabad, India, has been reconfigured to establish a new identity while preserving the essence of the original design. During discussions, the architects agreed that renovation minimizes intervention compared to demolition and rebuilding.

To avoid excessive alterations, the scope of renovation was carefully controlled, ensuring the core design theme remained intact. This two-story residence is a harmonious extension of the original, seamlessly blending old and new elements. The first floor includes a living room, bedroom, kitchen, dining room, entertainment room, and a Buddhist temple. The second floor houses two bedrooms, a family living room, a children’s room, and an outdoor balcony.

Following the principle of minimal construction, only two columns were added while retaining most of the original concrete structure for internal reconfiguration. The façade was renovated to better respond to the local climate and wind conditions, maximizing natural light. Simultaneously, various facilities were upgraded, and residential spaces redesigned to accommodate the evolving needs of the family. The primary goal was to minimize design impact, rebuild sustainably, protect natural resources, and avoid unnecessary pollution.

The design prioritizes energy efficiency, water conservation, and the use of renewable resources to meet environmental standards. The project emphasizes cost-effectiveness and was meticulously planned and executed, saving substantial land and financial resources. The renovated Private Mansion No. 555 successfully enhances the flexibility, capacity, and sustainability of the existing structure at minimal cost.
