BIM initially started as a set of basic design tools. However, as the purpose of BIM became clearer, it evolved into a BIM platform. 1. File Size Computational Processing Capability: This refers to the platform’s ability to efficiently handle large-scale, high-end projects. It involves managing numerous 3D parametric components while maintaining responsive performance. At the tool level, this capability is important but usually limited in scope. When managing parameters at the project management level—such as sections, elevations, or the entire building perimeter—computational processing during design is critical. From a data management perspective, a core consideration is whether the system relies primarily on CDs or memory sticks for data storage.

2. Tool Interface: As a platform, BIM applications must provide comprehensive information—geometry, properties, and relationships—to other software. Typical use cases include structural analysis, energy modeling, cost estimation, design coordination through clash detection, procurement tracking, and construction scheduling. The importance of these interfaces depends on the intended use of the BIM platform and the specific workflows it supports.

3. BIM Database: Each BIM platform includes various pre-defined databases to reduce the need for users to define components from scratch. Generally, the more pre-defined components available, the more helpful the platform becomes. While there should be criteria to assess the quality of these components for different purposes, achieving standardized information structures for components remains a challenge.

4. Platform User Interface Consistency: The interface standards vary depending on the usage scenario. In large companies, professionals or consultants from different departments use the tools independently, each following their own tool-specific logic. Alternatively, when tools are shared among multiple users on a platform, interface consistency becomes crucial to ensure ease of learning and usability.

5. Scalability: Scalability is evaluated by whether the BIM platform supports scripting or programming languages. These interactive languages allow users to add new functionality or automate routine tasks. The extent to which this feature is needed depends on the expectations of the organizations using the platform, especially for custom revisions, special features, or integrations with other applications.

Interchangeability: BIM platforms must enable sharing of partial model data with other applications, such as early feasibility studies, system operations by engineers and consultants, and subsequent construction phases. Effective collaboration relies on the platform’s ability to provide interfaces and support open data exchange standards for seamless import and export of information.

7. Multi-user Collaboration: Some BIM systems support collaborative work by allowing multiple users to create and edit the same project components simultaneously. They also provide access control to manage user permissions for different parts of the data.

8. Effective Attribute Management: Attributes are essential database components in most BIM tools. These attribute sets need to be easily configurable and linked to the individual components they describe. The quality and approach to attribute management vary significantly across different platforms.
