My Personal Definition of Building Information Modeling (BIM)

BIM—the definition of this term varies throughout the industry, with the most widely recognized being the National BIM Standard (NBIMS) in the United States. Today, I’d like to share my personal perspective on what BIM means and invite you to join the conversation.

Historically, architectural designs were created by hand using pen and paper, resulting in 2D drawings such as plans, elevations, sections, and perspectives. These drawings provided detailed information about the design and construction. However, this traditional method often led to errors and conflicts among construction teams and project managers due to fragmented information.

With advancements in computer technology, drafting evolved from 2D to 3D computer-aided design, paving the way for the development of Building Information Modeling. Introduced by Howell and Batcheler in the Laiserin Letter in 2005, BIM integrates both graphical and non-graphical data into a comprehensive information model for construction projects. This approach is applicable not only during design and construction phases but throughout the entire lifecycle of a building.

BIM relies on 3D models enriched with relevant project information to support integrated project management. This approach significantly enhances construction efficiency while substantially reducing risks.

The primary use of BIM is to create virtual simulations of design concepts, building forms, and spatial environments through 3D visualization. Before construction begins, stakeholders can review and confirm project requirements from multiple perspectives, helping to minimize misunderstandings among designers, owners, and engineering teams.

Additionally, the embedded parameter data within BIM models accurately communicate design intent, greatly improving collaboration and coordination across disciplines. BIM acts as a platform for integrating models from various specialties, reducing communication errors and inconsistencies caused by varying professional terminologies.

By identifying potential conflicts early in the design phase, BIM contributes to higher construction quality. It also enables precise calculation of construction materials, assisting owners in maintaining cost control. Leveraging the powerful computing capabilities of modern systems, BIM goes beyond simulation and drafting—it supports defining, testing, and presenting design models with accurate quantity takeoffs.

These are my personal reflections on the definition of BIM. This perspective is neither exhaustive nor definitive, as BIM is an evolving methodology shaped by ongoing practice. Consequently, people’s understanding of BIM varies depending on their individual viewpoints.
