Currently, BIM (Building Information Modeling) represents a cutting-edge technology in the construction industry. Its implementation requires comprehensive training, updated system protocols, and the establishment or revision of image libraries and file templates. Additionally, it often needs to be integrated with new business operation models. Here, I would like to share my personal insights on BIM training.
I encourage every construction company to adopt BIM; however, it is crucial to develop a well-thought-out plan beforehand. This plan should anticipate potential challenges and include a set of standards to guide its execution. Blindly following industry trends without considering the company’s development trajectory is not advisable. BIM will only be successful when the plan aligns closely with the company’s goals.
At the initial stage of any project, acquiring fundamental BIM skills should take priority before advancing to more complex integrations. When implementing BIM on a larger scale, training should focus on core technologies such as building modeling, generating construction drawings, and defining component libraries. Once a solid foundation in archive processing is established, companies can explore numerous extension possibilities, embracing the diverse integration and interactivity benefits that BIM offers.
One important caution when starting with BIM training is to avoid creating overly detailed models prematurely. Since defining and refining BIM projects is only partially automated, highly detailed models early on can lead to misinterpretations of the design intent. While completing a detailed model during the conceptual design phase might seem straightforward, it risks misleading clients into making irreversible decisions too soon. BIM training helps users understand the significance of these challenges and how to avoid them.
Once a company commits to BIM training, it should formalize the arrangement with a service contract. This contract must clearly specify the training content, duration, cost, responsibilities of both parties, as well as breach of contract clauses and compensation terms. Such agreements ensure efficient training under fair and balanced conditions. For individuals, it is essential to research the reputation and outcomes of previous trainees before selecting a training institution.
