BIM Architecture: Diagonal Lightweight 'Wings' Design in the Swiss New Apostolic Church

The expansion of the New Apostolic Church in Lausanne, Switzerland, is thoughtfully designed to integrate the inherent qualities of the existing buildings. Our design philosophy emphasizes clear diagonal lines, which not only enhance spatial organization and flow but also serve as a defining architectural feature.

Our vision aims to honor and preserve the spatial concepts of the original building while introducing contemporary elements of brightness and openness. This expansion is closely linked to the renovation of the existing structure, blending the heritage of the old building with a modern, forward-looking approach.

The original first-floor foyer has been preserved and expanded. Maintaining the spatial essence of the existing building, it was crucial to keep the main circulation paths and the stairwells situated at the building’s corners. These stairwells have been refurbished and updated with lighter, more transparent handrails. The new entrance is positioned at the southwest corner, leading into a spacious foyer that offers clear sightlines into various activities, inviting the community into an open and dynamic space.

The new building features two wings that extend outward from the church’s corners, expanding the first-floor foyer towards the new entrance. One triangular wing is integrated with the existing elevator and connects to the opposite wing, creating a multifunctional hall. This intersection, located at the corner, forms a rooftop-covered plaza in front of the church, where a new entrance also opens. The church appears to be lifted by these wings, which create welcoming openings for visitors. This architectural concept symbolizes openness and flight, bridging the earth and the heavens.

The exterior facade has been redesigned to comply with the latest energy efficiency standards, ensuring optimal thermal comfort for occupants. The original facade has been replaced by exposed concrete structures, featuring light colors and materials. The building’s straightforward materiality reflects a strong, distinctive character.
