According to reports, relevant authorities in Taiwan have requested Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP) to revise the design of Terminal 3 at Taipei Taoyuan International Airport in order to accelerate the completion of this already delayed project.

RSHP was appointed as the design firm for this £1.5 billion project in 2016, after winning a competition against firms such as Foster & Partners and UN Studio. The design draws inspiration from Taiwan’s traditional brick roofs and the region’s picturesque landscapes. Inside, the plan features lighting elements integrated through flower-shaped aluminum tubes.

However, at a recent press conference, the construction party criticized the design of the 640,000-square-meter terminal for creating challenges in assembling the construction team, and demanded a review of the plan within six months.
They added that this year alone, the project budget has increased by 5% due to difficulties in attracting contractors, pushing the completion date to 2023. Based on current exchange rates, the budget now stands at 78.9 billion New Taiwan Dollars (approximately £2 billion).

The construction party also stated that parts of the project, including the taxiway and apron, which have been under construction since 2017, will be temporarily halted.
They emphasized, “With the increased project budget, the original design must be modified to allow construction to begin as soon as possible.”

They further explained, “Due to the project’s complex design, bidding to secure contractors has failed three times. We have requested the design consultancy to make revisions within six months to attract bidders. If our requirements are not met, we will consider terminating the contract with the design firm.”
