Sample Questions for Level 3 (Construction) of the National BIM Skill Level Examination

Exam Requirements:

  1. Exam format: computer-based operation, open book;
  2. Duration: 360 minutes total—240 minutes in the morning and 120 minutes in the afternoon;
  3. Create a new folder named with your admission ticket number and name to store all files generated during the exam. Upload and submit the model and design results before the morning session ends. Before the afternoon session ends, upload and submit a report file (format is not restricted, but PowerPoint with notes or embedded audio is recommended).

Test Sections:

  1. Using the provided construction drawings, organization materials, and documents, independently create a construction model with BIM software. Based on this model, develop detailed construction design, organization, and management plans. Save your work in the candidate folder with the filename “Construction Model + Candidate Name.xxx”.

  2. Project Overview: This project involves a parking lot building located in Beijing with five floors—four above ground and one underground. The main building height above ground is 15.0 meters (to the parapet top), with each floor standing 3.0 meters tall. The basement height is 2.5 meters. Currently, the project is in the structural construction phase. All structures up to the F4 floor roof are complete, along with secondary structures and plastering on the F1 floor. The next steps include structural construction of the F5 floor and masonry and plastering of secondary structures from the F2 floor upwards.

  3. Attachment Materials: Construction drawings (including details on equipment, materials, and other relevant information) and BIM models in IFC format (covering architectural, structural, and electromechanical disciplines).

  4. Specific Requirements for Construction Modeling and Management:

    1. Create a Construction Model

      1. Import the IFC BIM models into the appropriate software (5 points).
      2. Complete detailed construction design modeling, creating and linking multidimensional construction information to support construction management.
    2. Construction Deepening Design

      Complete detailed design of F5 floor nodes from Axis 11 to Axis D (10/16) (10 points).

    3. Construction Organization Design

      1. Set up and arrange models of construction sites and related facilities, including formwork, scaffolding, construction machinery, etc., ensuring compliance with construction planning and regulatory requirements (10 points).
      2. Integrate architectural, structural, electromechanical, and site models (5 points).
      3. Use methods such as collision detection, mechanical analysis, clearance checks, and virtual walkthroughs to identify at least three different types of safety and quality issues that exist or may arise during construction at this stage. Propose corrective measures through BIM technology (10 points).
    4. Construction Management

      1. Select suitable BIM management software to associate the schedule with the building and structural models (excluding mechanical, electrical, and site models). Conduct 4D construction simulations and optimize the construction organization design (10 points).
      2. Based on the optimized design, prepare a construction operation manual or simulate the construction process of the current structural phase. This should facilitate technical disclosure and provide guidance for on-site construction (10 points).
      3. Using provided material prices and geometric data, calculate the quantity and total cost of the structural engineering at this stage (10 points).
  5. Report File Requirements:

    • Overall description of construction organization;
    • Presentation of the complete BIM model with renderings or animated walkthroughs of key areas;
    • Results of the detailed design;
    • Quality and safety analysis reports including corrective actions;
    • Construction process simulation and technical disclosures;
    • Bill of quantities and cost analysis;
    • Additional work demonstrating the candidate’s ability to apply BIM technology for construction design and management.

    The report should be clean, well-organized, and visually appealing, clearly demonstrating mastery of BIM core technologies, proficiency in BIM application software, and the ability to apply BIM for construction design, organization, and management (30 points).

  6. The candidate is responsible for all unspecified aspects of the exam.
