Today, we will discuss the applications of BIM in the bridge operation and management stage. Countries worldwide are dedicated to integrating BIM into engineering projects to achieve enhanced visibility, continuous and synchronized data flow, and reduced costs. Although the use of BIM in bridge engineering is still in its early exploratory phase, it has yet to become widely adopted throughout the entire lifecycle of bridges.
1. Panoramic Observation
BIM technology enables engineering visualization, allowing stakeholders to simulate the entire bridge project and its surrounding environment before construction begins. Autodesk Revit, a software specifically designed for BIM, is commonly used for designing construction and bridge projects. It facilitates effective communication among engineers from different disciplines by creating detailed bridge models. These models can then be imported into AutoCAD, along with terrain images, to provide a comprehensive view of the project site. This integrated approach helps all parties understand the overall scope of the bridge project prior to construction.
Figure 3 illustrates a suspension bridge project created with Revit and visualized in AutoCAD.
2. Inspection Mode
BIM technology not only visualizes bridge engineering but also supports bridge inspection during operation and maintenance. It can simulate daily, regular, and periodic inspections through software. Maintenance teams often use 3DS MAX to model bridge components requiring inspection and utilize its animation features to simulate inspection processes. This helps personnel from various disciplines understand the structure and components of the bridge, while also clarifying the tasks for maintenance staff.
3. Disease Development
BIM facilitates the visualization of bridge inspections and detection of defects by simulating the progression of issues within bridge components. Using 3DS MAX, maintenance personnel can digitally model components prone to common defects and create animations that show how these issues develop over time. This approach aids cross-disciplinary understanding of defect progression and provides a standardized method for maintenance teams to document and record bridge diseases, simplifying data input into the bridge operation management system after inspection.
4. Maintenance Priority
Applying BIM in bridge operation and maintenance reduces inspection and repair costs while improving efficiency. Through secondary development, software like AutoCAD can transform complex and abstract textual defect data into intuitive visual formats. When maintenance personnel input detailed defect information into custom AutoCAD functions, the software categorizes and summarizes this data, marking different components with colors based on the number of defects. This visual prioritization helps maintenance teams easily assess which components require urgent attention and facilitates the development of effective maintenance plans.
5. Repair Feedback
BIM also supports synchronization of maintenance data, extending the maintenance priority function. After inspections and repairs, maintenance teams can input feedback and processing information into AutoCAD’s custom-developed features. The software overlays this updated data onto the original inspection records and dynamically re-labels components with colors based on their defect status. This real-time monitoring capability allows for continuous tracking of the condition of each bridge component.

As China’s bridge construction phase gradually concludes, more experts are shifting their focus to bridge operation, maintenance, and repair.
