Top BIM Interior Design Software: Benefits and Drawbacks Explained

Today, the author wants to introduce What are BIM Interior Design Software? What Are Their Advantages and Disadvantages? Currently, there are many different BIM design software available on the market. These tools are used for architecture, product design, landscaping, mold creation, animation, and other computer-aided applications that help present detailed interior design visuals. Besides basic vector plane software, some of the most commonly used programs include 3ds Max, Rhino, SketchUp, and Revit—collectively known as BIM software.

1. SketchUp

SketchUp is an easy-to-use and creative 3D modeling software with relatively simple commands. Thanks to its collaboration with Google, many users upload and share their 3D models, enhancing its functionality. According to surveys, SketchUp accounts for 95.6% of the software used in architectural firms, followed by 3ds Max. It is especially suitable for early design stages due to its short modeling time and user-friendly interface. Respondents emphasize that “SketchUp should be a core tool,” making it as indispensable as AutoCAD in many architectural practices. However, SketchUp has limitations when dealing with complex surfaces and designs, as its polygon-based surfaces offer weaker support for free-form shapes.

2. 3ds Max

3ds Max, developed by Autodesk, is a professional 3D animation software widely applied in film visual effects, game scene and character creation, architectural engineering, interior design, and industrial product design. Many companies and educational institutions use 3ds Max to create detailed 3D models, such as animation environments or game characters. The software excels at adding intricate details to character models, making it popular for creating virtual reality scenes in online games. It offers a variety of basic geometric shapes that can be modified, combined, or sculpted to meet specific project needs. However, since 3ds Max also relies on polygonal surfaces, it is challenging to integrate with NURBS-based engineering software. This limits its use mainly to visualization rather than serving as a foundation for engineering processes.

3. Rhino

Rhino primarily uses NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) for modeling. NURBS mathematically describe shapes with high precision and flexibility, making Rhino applicable in various fields such as illustration, animation, industrial manufacturing, and more. It is widely used in 3D industrial design sectors like shipbuilding, aerospace, medical equipment, automotive interiors and exteriors, and household products—especially for freeform design. Professional animators and graphic designers often prefer NURBS because, unlike mesh models composed of many small planes, NURBS create smooth surfaces that can also be converted to mesh models. Rhino offers precise dimension settings, minimizing size errors during bitmap conversion or editing.

4. Revit

Revit is one of the most widely used BIM software in China, featuring three main modules: architecture, structure, and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing). It boasts strong data integration and visualization capabilities, combined with user-friendly parametric design. When paired with cloud services, Revit delivers powerful color display functions and supports extensive secondary development. However, it demands high computer configurations and resources and suffers from poor compatibility with other software. In BIM collaboration, multiple software tools often need to interoperate, so limited support can be frustrating for users. Additionally, managing central archives and worksets securely is a challenging task.
