Challenges of BIM Implementation in China and Strategies for Its Advancement

Previously, I have extensively discussed the application and development of BIM in our country. Many readers have expressed interest in further exploring the challenges and promotion strategies related to BIM implementation. Today, I will address these topics: What are the problems in BIM application in China? What are the strategies for its promotion?

1. Clarifying the Challenges Faced

The main challenges encountered by various organizations include unclear responsibilities in BIM application, the absence of standardized BIM guidelines and contract templates, and a lack of detailed acceptance criteria. Additionally, strengthening the training and skill development of government personnel in BIM technology and enhancing their related knowledge remain significant hurdles for most institutions.

2. Identifying Obstacles in BIM Application

Government agencies face several obstacles when applying BIM, such as unfamiliarity with the technology, inability to demonstrate sufficient economic benefits, high initial investment costs, a perception that benefits do not outweigh costs, and subjective beliefs that BIM is unnecessary.

3. Confirming the Benefits of BIM in Problem Solving

Integrating BIM technology into engineering projects can effectively address issues like reducing errors and rework, minimizing construction conflicts, improving the understanding of design objectives, enhancing design quality, strengthening facility and asset management, and improving coordination across interfaces.

Regarding promotion strategies, I recommend referring to the article “What are the strategies and promotion methods for the development of BIM”. Here, I will briefly highlight two key points:

1. Developing Effective Implementation Strategies

Organizations should incorporate necessary knowledge supervision and management, along with BIM-driven strategic evaluations, when formulating effective implementation plans. These components are explained below:

1. Knowledge Supervision and Management: This involves considering human resources, processes, and technology. Detailed tasks should be identified using a bottom-up approach, including organizational management, refining management strategies, streamlining processes, applying BIM technology, enhancing personnel skills, and encouraging active participation.

2. Evaluation of BIM Promotion Strategies: During the initial phase of importing BIM, organizations must assess the driving strategies each unit needs to adopt and implement these systematically, thereby increasing the effectiveness and value of BIM adoption.

2. Making Good Use of Domestic BIM Professional Guidelines

Most domestic companies lack dedicated BIM professional teams, often assembling them temporarily (except for some large state-owned enterprises). Therefore, application units should rely on BIM professional guidelines developed by external experts as execution references. To utilize these guidelines effectively, at least the following three tasks should be performed:

1. Project BIM Integration Process: This includes assessing the project lifecycle, defining project objectives, selecting delivery projects, choosing appropriate BIM applications, and evaluating required capabilities and resources.

2. BIM Streamlining Process: Streamlining should focus on principles such as reducing waste, increasing feedback, empowering teams, creating value, delaying judgment, and delivering results quickly.

3. Establishing a BIM Guide: The guide should cover specifications and standards, case study databases, system construction, and overall supply chain information management.

That concludes the discussion on what challenges exist in BIM application in China and what promotion strategies can be adopted. I hope this article provides valuable insights for everyone!
