The project is to build a football stadium that can accommodate 40000 people for the 2022 World Cup, and after the end of the World Cup, the stadium will be reduced to 20000 seats according to traditional models. This 20000 seat stadium is the best home stadium used by the professional football team of Al Wakrah Sports Club in the Qatar Star Football League. These temporary seats can be dismantled and transported to developing countries that require sports infrastructure for use in competitions. The FIFA World Cup competition mode requires more affordable temporary accommodation facilities. In traditional mode, this is a temporary building built outside the stadium and its fence.

The retractable roof of the stadium was designed by Schlaich Bergermann Partner in Germany, and it also includes a seat cooling system to ensure that the stadium can be used during Qatar’s summer season. This retractable roof is covered with foldable polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) sheets and cables. When it unfolds, the roof is like a sail, covering above the field, creating a sheltered environment for football matches in summer. The principles of passive design, computer modeling, and wind tunnel testing enable the physical shell to maximize its effectiveness, ensuring the comfort of both players and spectators.

Considering the environmental factors of the stadium being located in the coastal city of Al Wakrah, the client requested that its design reflect the maritime traditions and historical characteristics of the region, especially the unique traditional boats of the area – single masted sailboats. ZHA Architecture Firm combined these cultural elements in an abstract way in the design, and incorporated practical responses to climate, environment, and football field functional requirements. Abstractly transform these elements into new elements that are suitable for the football field; And provided a comprehensive interpretation of the references to these cultures, including their application and reading methods.

The roof of the stadium has been designed as an abstract, inverted single masted sailboat hull, which provides shade and shelter for the stadium. This is also reflected in the geometric enclosure structure, details, and selected materials of the sports stadium, including the top beam structure that corresponds to the internal structure of the single masted sailboat hull. The exterior of the sports stadium slopes outwards in a conical shape, reminiscent of the folds of a single masted sailboat. The image of a single masted sailboat becomes more prominent through the large overhanging eaves of the sports stadium, which include a metal cladding reminiscent of the wooden structure of a single masted sailboat.

The opaque roof and walls of the sports stadium exhibit a wrinkled structure. This feature originates from Arabic patterns and calligraphy, which not only enhances the texture of the shell but also highlights the unique geometric shape of the stadium. The cladding material of the exterior wall is deliberately selected from materials with limited color tones; That is to say, the roof and wall coverings are white, while the area under the eaves is dark, including the curtain wall used on the lower level. (BIM learning) Its decorative grid pattern provides shading function.

The color scheme of the external enclosure structure of the stadium matches its geometric shape and enhances the clarity of the outer skin. The opaque surface area above the roof cover and eaves is white or gray white, and the surface is treated to be glossy, resembling a shell, with prominent folds, adding texture to the building envelope. The relief eaves and grid screen printing on the bottom facade are in metallic bronze color, adding richness and depth to the design. The surface decorated with these bronze metal veneers is a tribute to Islamic traditional craftsmanship and artistry.

The sports stadium is located on a large landscape platform that can take visitors from all levels to the entrance level, with the main entrance square located in the middle of the audience seats. This platform connects the stadium with the nearby landscape and reduces its scale. The huge parabolic gaps within the platform represent different activity areas. Most spectators can enter and exit the stadium through the east exit. The space to the northeast will include a community market, while the space to the southeast will be an activity park. Vehicles can enter from the parabolic space inside the western platform, where athletes, officials, and important personnel can disembark.

The stadium is well integrated with a new area, so it is also located in the central area of the city’s expansion. On non match days, community activities can also be held inside and around the stadium. The Al Janoub Stadium will be an unforgettable venue during and after Qatar’s 2022 World Cup, located in the heart of the Al Wakrah community.
