Let’s talk today about The Current Status and Future Trends of BIM Development Abroad.
The concept of Building Information Modeling (BIM) originated in the United States, with the U.S. General Services Administration being a pioneer in adopting this technology. Figure 1 illustrates the percentage of engineering projects in the U.S. infrastructure sector that have implemented BIM over the past four years. The horizontal axis represents the survey year, while the vertical axis shows the level of BIM application, expressed as a percentage.
From Figure 2, it is clear that both the extent and scope of BIM usage in engineering projects have steadily increased during this period. Using 50% adoption rate as a benchmark, in 2009, only 16% of projects applied BIM in more than half of their processes. However, by 2013, this figure had risen significantly to 52%, demonstrating growing acceptance and investment in BIM technology across engineering projects.
The Smart Market Report also provides valuable insights into user perceptions of BIM applications across various European countries. The main applications of BIM and their respective contribution percentages are shown in Figure 2. The top benefits, ranked from highest to lowest, include:
- Reducing conflicts during construction
- Enhancing understanding of design drawings
- Minimizing changes during construction
- Improving overall project quality
- Accelerating client approval cycles
This data serves as a useful reference to analyze the current status and demand for BIM in China.
In recent years, many international cities have actively promoted BIM adoption. The Concept and Introduction of BIM
The international organization BuildingSMART (formerly known as the International Alliance for Interoperability, IAI) developed and released the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) standard for 3D geometric data modeling. This standard facilitates building information technology, enabling engineering documents to be reviewed and interpreted through computer software based on design components and parameters, which is widely applied in the construction industry.
Currently, BuildingSMART members include Australia, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, the French-speaking Alliance, the German-speaking Alliance, the Iberian Alliance, Japan, South Korea, the Nordic countries, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. Below is an overview of BIM adoption in some of these member countries:
- The United States: One of the earliest adopters of BIM. Since 2007, the primary strategy has involved submitting 3D BIM models. In 2008, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) proposed fully integrating various workflows centered around BIM, fundamentally transforming traditional architectural design approaches.
- United Kingdom: In 2009, the London Underground system used BIM as the platform for designing and constructing the entire line. The UK also developed BIM operational standards for building models, known as the AEC (UK) BIM Standard.
- Singapore: Among the first countries to invest in automatic regulatory verification research. BIM is applied throughout the entire building lifecycle, including urban design review, architectural and structural design reviews, temporary construction permits, fire safety, legal completion certificates, and regular structural inspections. Since 2010, Singapore has mandated BIM use for public works projects, and since 2015, BIM has been required for all public and private building projects.
- South Korea: Established a national BIM development plan and published the “BIM Application Guidelines for the Construction Industry” in January 2010. This guide specifies essential elements, conditions, and methods for building owners, architects, and designers to adopt BIM technology.
- Denmark: Requires BIM models and IFC standards for public works projects exceeding two million euros.
That wraps up our discussion on The Current Status and Future Trends of BIM Development Abroad. I hope this article provides useful insights for everyone!
