The “22MCC Cup” 2018 National Steel Structure Prefabricated Building Design Innovation Competition, sponsored by the Tangshan Municipal Government and the China Steel Structure Association, successfully concluded on December 29, 2018. This competition, themed “Green Tangshan • Creative Steel Structure,” embraced the spirit of “Innovation and Dreams.” Its purpose was to promote the integration of innovative design concepts with steel structure buildings, boost the regional manufacturing industry’s supply capabilities, enhance industrial quality and efficiency, and drive the transformation and development of Tangshan city.
The China Steel Structure Association conducted a preliminary review of the submitted projects and selected 23 outstanding entries from over 30 national participants to advance to the finals.
In this issue, we highlight the first prize winner of the 2018 National Steel Structure Prefabricated Building Design Innovation Competition, the “22MCC Cup.” The winning project, titled “Tangshan Window – Comprehensive Office Building Scheme Design,” was developed by representatives from Multidimensional United Group Co., Ltd. and Beijing Jianzhu University.
Main Participants:
Guo Jianyun, Zhang Ailin, Zhang Yanxia, Xie Zhiqiang
Zhao Wenzhan, Zheng Mingzhao, Zeng Jieying, Huang Weizhen, Hao Shengling, Wang Yan
Project Overview and Scheme 1 Highlights
This building is classified as an office under the public building category. It stands 18.18 meters tall and covers an area of 2,848.76 square meters. The structural system features a BIM-guided steel frame seismic design. The design philosophy emphasizes green vitality, openness, simplicity, and functionality.
Inspired by the concepts of “windows” and “building blocks,” the design employs BIM for multidisciplinary collaboration. The plan incorporates panoramic windows and a slanted exterior frame, creating an inviting façade. A key innovation is the use of prefabricated building blocks to simplify specifications while allowing for numerous combinations.

The competition emphasized energy-efficient and green building design, following the “Hebei Public Building Energy Efficiency Design Standard” (DB13 (J) 81-2016) and the “Green Building Evaluation Standard” GBT50378-2014. Key green design features include improving thermal performance of the building envelope by 10%, adjustable shading covering up to 50% of the area, prefabricated components making up over 50% of the structure, use of reusable and recyclable materials, and the installation of fresh air and heat recovery systems throughout the building.

Construction is fast and convenient without scaffolding; pipeline installation is straightforward and easy to secure.
4. Exterior Enclosure Design
The design of prefabricated exterior wall systems faces two main challenges. First, the development of lightweight, efficient composite enclosure products and their raw materials; second, advanced connection technologies and products; thermal bridge break technologies and materials for enclosure structures; waterproofing, anti-corrosion, and durable joint treatment technologies and materials; and a comprehensive standardization system with standardized products.
Additionally, the enclosure system must be fully compatible with the innovative structural system.

Summary of the Five Plans
This design incorporates multiple patented innovations: two invention patents related to the structural system, two invention patents for floor slab construction methods, and three invention patents concerning exterior wall systems. These four new technologies showcase the design’s innovation and modular assembly approach.
The building uses a variety of recyclable materials, emphasizing sustainability and environmental friendliness. It features creative and elegant aesthetics, boldly employing cantilevers and offset elements within a rational structural framework. The steel structure, floor support plates, and exterior wall components demonstrate a high degree of industrialization.
