The Casa Maria Rosa villa renovation, carried out by VAGA Arquitetura, is situated in a semi-detached residential neighborhood in the densely populated Itaim Bibi area of São Paulo, Brazil. The project aims to transform this villa into an urban sanctuary, offering residents a serene retreat from the city’s hustle and bustle.

The primary objective of this renovation was to cultivate a peaceful and tranquil environment for both residents and their guests. To achieve this, the design strengthens the living areas and enhances the connection with the backyard located at the end of the property. The renovation includes subtle interventions aimed at reconfiguring the home’s layout and improving the quality of the existing structure. All changes respect the original characteristics of the villa and maintain the integrity of its surrounding environment, while fulfilling the functional needs of the homeowners.

The villa spans three floors, with access through a single entrance on the middle level. On this floor, the designers extended the floor slab to create a living room near the entrance and a kitchen that overlooks the garden at the back. This expansion of outdoor space allows the villa to offer a garden-like living experience—a rare feature in a bustling metropolis like São Paulo, especially on a small plot.

The external staircase that once linked the middle and lower floors has been relocated inside the main building. This move opens up the outdoor space and improves natural lighting on the lower level. The redesigned lower floor now includes a workspace, a gaming area, a TV room, and a small bathroom. This renovation introduces new functions and qualities to the space, such as increased natural light, enhanced visual and spatial integration with the garden, reconfigured vertical circulation, repositioned wet areas, and the addition of a dedicated laundry annex. On the more private upper floor, only selective renovations were made, focusing on redesigning the decor of two bedrooms and a bathroom.

Throughout the renovation, original materials such as bricks, reinforced concrete, and wood have been thoughtfully combined with modern design elements. These materials emphasize the villa’s simple, rustic character while evoking emotional memories for its residents. This blend of textures fosters a strong sense of belonging and comfort within the urban environment.
