ON/OFF is a buyer’s shop affiliated with Fosun Group and BFC, featuring numerous top independent designer brands. Located in the commercial district of Shanghai’s Bund Financial Center, the store was recently designed by SLT Design Studio (STUDIOLITE). The design focuses on delivering a playful and artistic shopping experience within an open, free-flowing space. By exploring contrasts of light and shadow, carefully chosen color palettes, flexible and adaptive installation systems, and a fusion of exquisite materials, the space embodies an energetic, youthful urban vibe.

The store’s entire open, streamlined exterior deconstructs and reorganizes traditional retail boundaries, creating a dynamic spatial dialogue between the interior and public areas. From the styled showcase on the far left to the brightly colored circular product displays and the open key product presentation area, passersby can experience the brand’s charm even from outside. The entrance features a large, rotating stainless steel spherical art piece that reflects and refracts the surrounding environment. On the far right, the Pop-Up area reveals a mysterious cave-like passage, while a customized curved LED soft screen displays dynamic digital content that enhances the atmosphere and commercial appeal.

The interior design breaks away from the uniformity typical of retail spaces by naturally dividing the area into distinct zones defined by site characteristics. To accommodate various operational needs, the design incorporates flexible and modular display units combined with adjustable lighting systems. These allow the space to transform seamlessly between retail mode, event mode, and runway mode. This flexible approach provides brands with greater freedom in presentation. The private water bar area offers panoramic views of the Bund Pier and iconic Shanghai skyline. Throughout the store, subtle details continuously surprise visitors, encouraging exploration.

The half-curved walls of varying heights integrate seamlessly with the clothing displays, as if custom-made to each garment’s unique measurements. The interplay of curved walls and the ceiling’s curved forms guide customers naturally through the shopping route. The ceiling features crisscrossing lines embedded with light tubes, creating a layered lighting effect in combination with stacked mirrors. The soft, neutral walls contrast with lively geometric color patterns in different zones, harmonizing with the carpet tones to achieve a balance of vibrancy and texture. Materials such as customized terrazzo and natural marble retain their original polishing marks, which juxtapose beautifully with the hand-cut textures of the clothing, immersing visitors in an abstract and constructivist art museum atmosphere.

The lighting design employs LED styling lines and track lights. The LED lines extend from ceiling to floor, mirroring other curved elements and serving as linear light sources that also help define spatial zones. Track lights provide focused illumination for key displays.

The design language combines geometric blocks, points, lines, and planes to express spatial constructivism aesthetics. Meanwhile, the contrasting textures of different materials highlight the careful attention to material details.
