Located in the historic city of Suzhou, 80 kilometers west of Shanghai, Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University and its Business School form a vibrant academic community. BDP had the privilege of designing the South Campus, culminating in the completion of the latest building—the Business School Teaching Building. Prior to this, BDP successfully delivered designs for five teaching buildings on the South Campus.

The newly constructed Xipu Business School, part of Phase II, is situated on the western side of the South Campus. It neighbors the International Academic Exchange Center, Humanities and Social Sciences Building, and International Research Center, all under development in Phase I. The campus layout is organized around a central landscaped square and lake, creating a cohesive architectural ensemble that reflects the original master plan’s vision.

The overall design concept for Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University’s South Campus aims to foster a comfortable, vibrant, and creative educational environment. The new teaching building is arranged concentrically, facing an artificial lake at the campus center, enhancing the campus’s tranquil atmosphere.

The architectural design emphasizes a strong connection between the interior spaces and the lakeside landscape through extensive east-facing glass curtain walls. Thoughtful detailing of glass louvers optimizes natural daylighting, even under low sunlight conditions.

The building’s remaining facades maintain consistency in color and materials with other campus structures. They feature elongated ceramic panels, triangular bay windows, and ceramic stick louvers on the west side for shading. The east facade remains visually open with glass surfaces to maximize the use of diffused eastward light.

The building’s design encourages a flexible, diverse learning environment, ensuring that every space is fully functional throughout daily activities. The distinctive five-star shaped lake symbolizes the university’s five-star educational philosophy and acts as the focal point of the central square. Surrounding the lake are five teaching buildings arranged to create a harmonious, inward-focused environment that enhances communication and collaboration.
The atrium serves as a vibrant social and educational hub, featuring a reception and exhibition area, café, gaming zone, learning resource center, and innovation hub, fostering a dynamic campus life.
