Sample Question for Level 3 (Building Equipment Design) of the National BIM Skill Level Examination

Exam Requirements:
1. Exam format: computer-based, open book.
2. Exam duration: 360 minutes (240 minutes in the morning and 120 minutes in the afternoon).
3. Create a new folder named with your admission ticket number and name to store all files generated during the exam.
    – Upload and submit the model and design results before the end of the morning session.
    – Upload and submit a report file before the end of the afternoon session. The report format is flexible; a PowerPoint with notes or embedded voice is recommended.

Test Sections:

  1. Using the provided building plan, project overview, and requirements, independently create building models and design mechanical and electrical equipment systems using BIM software. Save all results in your folder under the file name “Equipment Model + Candidate Name.xxx”.

Project Overview:
This project is located in Beijing on the first floor of a building with a height of 4.2 meters, functioning as a laboratory. The thermal transmittance coefficients are as follows:
    – Exterior wall: 0.56 W/(m·K)
    – Interior wall: 0.95 W/(m·K)
    – Roof: 0.49 W/(m·K)
    – External wall and curtain wall: 2.7 W/(m·K)

Attachment Materials:
First floor building plan and door and window schedule.

Specific Design and Modeling Requirements:

  1. Create a building model including grids, walls, columns, doors, windows, floor slabs, and other relevant components. Exterior walls should be 300mm thick, interior walls 200mm thick. Models for outdoor sprinklers, stairs, indoor elevators, and stairs are not required. The connection between exterior walls and columns should be simplified but with correct dimensions and positioning. (5 points)
  2. Calculate the HVAC load based on the building model and generate a load calculation report. (15 points)
  3. Design the building’s air conditioning and heating systems based on the load calculation. The air conditioning system uses a VRV multi-split system with fresh air mode, while heating relies on radiator heating. Build models for the air conditioning air and water systems, fresh air system, and heating system. Ensure condensate pipe slopes are no less than 5‰. (15 points)
  4. Develop a bathroom water system model based on the bathroom layout. The drainage pipe slope should be 8‰. Hot water systems are not considered. (10 points)
  5. Design and add switches, lighting fixtures, distribution boxes, and connecting wires according to the architectural layout to establish the lighting system model. (10 points)
  6. Assign colors to air ducts, water pipes, and cable trays based on their types for clear differentiation. (5 points)
  7. Perform clash detection to ensure no conflicts among air ducts, water pipes, equipment, lighting fixtures, etc., and produce a clash detection report. (10 points)
  8. The report file should include, but is not limited to:
        a) Design description;
        b) Overall BIM model with renderings or animated walkthroughs of key spaces;
        c) Load calculation and clash detection reports;
        d) Design diagrams for each system;
        e) Additional materials that demonstrate the candidate’s proficiency in applying BIM technology to building equipment design.
    The report should be clean and visually appealing, fully showcasing the candidate’s understanding of BIM core technologies, proficiency with BIM software, and ability to apply BIM for professional mechanical and electrical equipment modeling and design. (30 points)
  9. All other unspecified aspects should be determined by the candidate.
